Warminster Wiltshire: A small town standing on the River Wear in Wiltshire, Warminster has a population of just over 17,000 and a history going back to Anglo Saxon times, when it was called 'Worgemynster', a name which was first mentioned in 900 AD. In the Middle Ages the town grew prosperous through the wool and corn trades.

Warminster History: Possibly settled as far back as the Iron Age (a hillfort exists at Battlesbury Camp). Warminster became an established community during Anglo Saxon times when it became known as ‘Worgemynster’. In the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as ‘Guermynstre’ and has a population of about 400.
Warminster was first granted the right to hold a market in 1204 and though growth was gradual over the centuries, the town grew in importance during the Middle Ages, mostly due to the wool and cloth trade but also through the corn trade, as it became the second most important corn exchange in the West of England (after Bristol). Numerous fine building were constructed in the town, from wealth produced by these industries, including the Saint Denys Minster Church. The Corn Exchange was built in 1855 to rekindle the declining corn trade, which it achieved for a few years up until the end of the century.
In the English Civil War (1642-45), Warminster changed hands several times between Parliamentarians and Royalists, as first one then the other, gained the upper hand. During World War One many thousands of troops from the Commonwealth (especially New Zealand and Australia) were garrisoned in and around Warminster. Long associated with military activity, Warminster saw the construction of a Royal Ordnance depot in 1939 at Beggar’s Bush.
During the 1960’s and 1970’s Warminster became famous for another phenomenon, when strange noises heard in the area were attributed to UFO’s, and many local people reported hearing the sound which became known as ‘The Thing’.
